Spofforth in Bloom

The original incentive for 'Spofforth in Bloom' was proposed by Spofforth Parish Council and put into operation by the, then, Clerk Mrs. Hilary Chilton.

When Hilary had to retire through health problems, Jan Ward took over the reins but, sadly, she died after three years. For some time we entered without much success until 2002 when we decide to “go for it”. We formed a new committee, co-ordinated by Hilary Chilton and ran a plant stall at the Village Gala.

Then we looked at ways of expanding village involvement and did a “door to door” circular which produced seven new volunteers and £ 260 in donations.

The new committee met and decided to install lamp post baskets in the High Street and cut flower beds at several locations. As a result, many people in the village, seeing the effort that was being made, came forward with further offers of help and donations. Spofforth, as a village was becoming aware of what might be achieved.

We are always looking for more helpers and sponsors, so if you live in the village and agree that we should do everything possible to make Spofforth a pleasant place to be.

If you'd like to get involved, please contact John Stanley 01937 591154

In 2011, Spofforth achieved its highest accolade, proudly recieving the RHS Gold Rose Award alongside being awarded joint category winners in the villages section - well done to all those involved!

Spofforth now goes forward to represent Yorkshire Region in the National final of the RHS Britain in Bloom.

Spofforth in Bloom 2011 - 'The Team' by John Chilton

There's a rumour so I'm told,
That this year Spofforth may get gold.
If it's right and so it seems,
All credit's due to our great team.

Who's out working in every weather?
Our zealous, helpful, lovely Heather.
What inspiration drives us on?
Of course, our clever Chairman, John.

Quietly round the streets proceeding,
You'll see Douglas; staining; weeding.

Ian's lawns are smooth and neat,
It's his garden; Castle Street.
The Richman's garden and the rest,
We know the Judges were impressed.

There's several Johns.
Geoff, Mike and Joan,
Who's treasured for her cakes alone.

For all the work that they put in,
We must remember Dave and Lynn.
Meticulously planning still,
Mrs Chilton, known as Hil.

There's Dave and Wendy and Annette,
Watsons, Roberts, watering yet.
Di, Don and Judy, Julie too.
They all know there's much to do.

Janet, Rosie, Ruth and Barry,
Sophie, Charlotte, Carl and Gary
Susannah, Helen and Neil Greer,
Watering, planting all the year.

And if there's those I didn't mention,
That was never my intention.
For all the village, young and old,
Have done their best to get us gold.
And, if alas, it's not to be,
Spofforths a grand community.
