Spofforth Cricket Club

We know, from records in the village, that Cricket has been played in Spofforth since at least 1854 and it is likely therefore that our club is one of the oldest in the area.

The club was a founder member of the Wetherby League just after the end of the First World War and after a short spell in the Harrogate League returned to the Wetherby League in the mid to late 1950's. For the first few years the club survived in the lower divisions before winning the 2nd division championship in 1961 and has remained in the first division since that time. No other present club has a longer unbroken run in the top division.

The late 1960s to the early 1980s were a golden age for the Club with the League Championship being won on no fewer than 9 occasions as well as numerous cup competitions. In 1973 the club went through the season unbeaten winning the League Championship and both senior cup competitions, a feat which we believe is unique in the League.

In 1953 the club formed its first junior team, at under 16 level, and now operates teams at under 9, 11 13 15 and 15 as well. In 2009 we had in excess of 120 junior members, both boys and girls in all age groups and on junior evenings, Friday, regularly attracts in excess of 70 youngsters for coaching by our team of qualified Coaches and Assistant Coaches.

In 2004 the club achieved Sport England Clubmark Accreditation, the first Cricket Club in North Yorkshire and only the third in the whole of Yorkshire to achieve this mark. This was renewed in 2007 for a further three-year term. This Accreditation is a guarantee to all parents that the club operates in a child friendly manner and carries out all the statutory checks on a regular basis.

As a follow up to this accreditation the club achieved Focus Club status which gives us priority on funding and other services provided by the English Cricket Board including one to one attention from the Cricket Development Manager. for North Yorkshire, Ian Powell.

The club's ground, at the bottom of School Lane, down below the village school, is one of the best in the area and has been upgraded several times over the years and is looked after immaculately by our Ground Manager, Brian Marshall, and his assistant David Roberts. The ground is used regularly for representative cricket and for local finals.

We have an excellent clubhouse with a comfortable lounge area and well stocked bar serving Theakstons Best Bitter and Fosters Lager on draught, enjoyed by many of our over 130 social members on a regular basis. The clubhouse is always available for hire for private parties of all kinds.

Despite all the successes we are always on the lookout for new players for all senior and junior sides and all new members both playing and social are made most welcome.
